The Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) is developed by the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB) . The EPPP is designed to assess knowledge that is believed to be critical for the competent practice of psychology. Consequently all state and provincial boards require psychologists to pass the EPPP. It is important to contact the licensing board of your state or province early in the process, as each board has specific requirements that must be met to be eligible to take the EPPP.

The EPPP is computer administered at Prometric testing centers located throughout the U.S. and Canada. The EPPP is a standardized multiple-choice exam consisting of 225 questions with four choices per question. Of the 225 questions, 175 questions are scored while 50 are pilot items (not scored). Examinees typically have four hours and fifteen minutes to complete the exam, or roughly one minute per question.

There are four equivalent forms of the EPPP in circulation at any given point in time. About every six months, one form is retired and a new form is introduced. Scaled scores on the computerized EPPP range from 200 to 800. The ASPPB's recommended passing score cutoff for independent practice is 500, which most jurisdictions using the EPPP have accepted. Scaled scores are converted from raw scores (the number of questions answered corrected); a scaled score of 500 is roughly equivalent to a raw score of 70% correct. As the forms of the EPPP may vary in terms of difficulty, the exact raw score needed to attain a scaled score of 500 varies (e.g., on a harder form of the EPPP a raw score of 65% correct may be a 500).

In case of failure, a candidate may immediately reapply to take the EPPP as soon as score notification is received. State and provincial boards vary in how often they allow candidates to take the examination. The maximum allowed is four times in any 12-month period.

The EPPP covers eight content domains. The percentage of scored questions from each content domain is identical on each form of the EPPP.

  • Domain 1 – Biological Bases of Behavior (12%)
  • Domain 2 – Cognitive-Affective Bases of Behavior (13%)
  • Domain 3 – Social and Cultural Bases of Behavior (12%)
  • Domain 4 – Growth and Lifespan Development (12%)
  • Domain 5 – Assessment and Diagnosis (14%)
  • Domain 6 – Treatment, Intervention, Prevention, and Supervision (14%)
  • Domain 7 – Research Methods and Statistics (8%)
  • Domain 8 – Ethical/Legal/Professional Issues (15%)
